If you are applying for a Qatar driving license for the first time, the safest route is to confirm your eligibility with the General Directorate of Traffic, enroll in an approved driving school, complete the required lessons, and pass the eye, theory, parking and road tests.
Quick answer: A private light-vehicle license costs QAR 250 for five years for a non-Qatari and QAR 500 for ten years for a Qatari, according to the Ministry of Interior fee schedule. Your total will be higher because driving-school tuition, eye testing and repeat tests are separate. The authority does not publish one universal all-in total, so request a written quote from an approved school before paying.
Before you apply
- Hold a valid Qatar ID if you are a resident.
- Be at least 18 for a private light vehicle or motorcycle. Heavy-vehicle applicants must meet the higher age and professional eligibility rules confirmed by Traffic.
- Ask the Traffic Department or an approved school whether your QID profession is eligible.
- If you already hold a foreign license, ask whether you qualify for direct conversion, a test-only route or a full course. This depends on the issuing country and current Traffic rules.
Read the Qatar ID guide if your residency documents are not ready.
LTV, HTV, motorcycle and other classes
Light vehicle (often called LTV) is the normal private-car class. Motorcycle is a separate class and requires motorcycle training and testing. Heavy vehicle (often called HTV) covers vehicles such as trucks or buses, but the exact endorsement depends on the vehicle and work. Taxi, limousine, public transport and construction-equipment driving can require their own license or permit.
A car license does not automatically allow you to drive a motorcycle, truck or bus. Confirm the exact category printed on the application before enrolling.
Step-by-step application
- Check eligibility. Take your QID and existing license, if any, to an approved driving school or the Traffic Department.
- Complete the eye test. Use an accepted testing location and make sure the result is connected to your application.
- Choose the correct course. The school will confirm whether you need a full course, half course or another route.
- Study theory. Learn Qatar road signs, lane rules, safe following distance, hazards and traffic law.
- Take practical lessons. Practice vehicle control, lane discipline, roundabouts, parking and safe observation.
- Pass the tests. Applicants normally complete theory, parking and on-road assessments. The authority decides the order and whether another attempt is needed.
- Pay the official issuance fee. Review the class and validity before payment.
- Receive the license. Check the name, class and expiry date immediately.
How much money do you need?
The only dependable minimum is the official license fee plus the quote from your driving school. For a private light vehicle, the published MOI issuance fee is QAR 250/5 years for a non-Qatari and QAR 500/10 years for a Qatari. School packages vary by course length; eye tests and repeat attempts can add cost. Heavy-vehicle, motorcycle and commercial categories have different fees, but do not rely on an online “average” unless the amount appears in the live MOI schedule.
Use this calculation: school quote + eye test + test/retest charges + official license fee. Ask the school to identify every included attempt and any extra charge in writing.
What are the tests?
- Eye test: confirms the required visual standard.
- Theory test: checks road signs, road rules and safe-driving decisions.
- Parking test: checks controlled maneuvers in the test area.
- Road test: an examiner assesses observation, control, positioning and compliance on public roads.
Common questions
Can I use an international driving permit? It may cover eligible visitors temporarily, but it does not replace a Qatar license for a resident. Confirm your status with Traffic.
Can I convert my home-country license? Some licenses may qualify for conversion or a shorter route. The eligible-country list can change, so take the original license to Traffic or an approved school.
What if I fail? Follow the examiner or school's instructions for further lessons and rebooking. Confirm the next-test fee before paying.
